Doug Keen first started with Hopkins crew as a walk-on athlete in 1997 with
no previous rowing experience. He continued as a rower with the program for eight complete semesters, helping his lightweight eight team obtain two consecutive Dad Vail bronze medals, a fifth place Dad Vail finish, a three-year sweep of the Caspersen Cup, and numerous other medals in both lightweight and heavyweight events.
In the spring of 2000, the varsity lightweight eight that Keen stroked placed in the top 20 (among the ranks of Yale, Harvard, and Princeton) in the USRowing Coaches' Poll of men's collegiate lighweight eights. Keen graduated in May of 2001 with a bachelor's degree in both biomedical engineering and computer science.
Keen began his coaching career with Hopkins in the fall of 2001, shortly
after his graduation. During his coaching tenure, he has seen his
crews medal at many regattas including the Caspersen Cup, the Atlantic
Collegiate League Sprints, the Mid Atlantic Collegiate Championships,
and the Knecht Cup. Keen's knowledge of rowing technique and his
relentless attention to detail has enabled him to quickly transform
walk-on athletes with no previous rowing experience into highly
competitive rowers.
For the first time in over a decade, Keen has been able to assemble competitive men's novice eight entries for the Dad Vail Regatta, and hopes to continue that trend in upcoming years.
Keen currently lives in Baltimore and works full-time as an information
and management consultant.
